I was out of breath the time I had reached the end of the ever-lasting crowd. Dad must be angry, I thought. Probably called the cops too.
The weather was nice out, or at least as nice as New York weather can get. It was almost fall so the air had a cool bite to it, declaring it was the time to start shopping for sweaters. The streets were crowded with rushing shoppers eagerly wanted to get the best deals on their needs. My ears were filled of various noises of car horns, business workers on phone calls, and the normal chatter of people. Almost home, I thought.
By the time I reached the ally where my family's small apartment was, the noise had died out. Few horns were still in the distance, but much less than it was before.
Slowly I opened the door, afraid of what Dad was going to say about my late arrival. To my surprise, he wasn't there either. Probably another "surprise" travel again.. like always. I said to myself.
